Does baby sleep training work? Each week we feature a mama & baby who have been through it, survived, and are finally thriving with more sleep and less stress! Aimee Call, mother to Aurelia, sleep trained with me when baby was 4.5 months old. Here is their story…..

I finally decided to bite the bullet and sleep train because….

My health was suffering with the lack if sleep. I couldn’t be the best mom I could be and my poor daughter was sleep deprived.

My biggest worry about sleep training was….

Listening to my baby cry all night long.

Before sleep training my baby slept….

I don’t even know how many hours because it was so spaced out. She slept in my arms for naps, and was nursed to sleep. Her naps were 20 minutes max in her bed. At night she woke up every few hours, and wouldn’t sleep unless nursed. Then I had to wait 30 minutes or longer before she was dead asleep and I could carefully place her in bed. Often she’d wake right up and I would start the process over again.

After sleep training my baby sleeps….

11-12 hours a night, and 2 beautiful, long naps!!!

The sleep training process itself was….

It only worked when I followed the plan EXACTLY. Every time I got lazy or swayed from the plan there were 10 times more tears. When sticking to the plan, there really aren’t that many tears, and she took to it so so fast. She loves sleep now!!!

Did your attachment with your baby change in a positive or a negative way after sleep training?

Positive! We are both 10 times happier! I get my sleep and “me time” (which I didn’t even realize was SO important), and my sweet baby is 10 times happier. She doesn’t fall asleep in the car, or get drowsy between naps. She loves sleep now and she is so happy.

Do you feel like sleep training was a healthy choice for baby, you, and your family?

YES!!!

How would you respond to hearing, “Sleep training is selfish”?

Its the opposite actually. I am a much better mom with sleep and “me time”. I have helped her get the sleep she needs for her growth and development. It takes a selfless mama to stop rocking a baby to sleep.

How many nights did it take for baby’s nighttime sleep to improve and how many nights did it take for baby’s naps to improve?

About 2 nights, and a week before naps improved.

Would you recommend BST to a friend and if so, who and why?

Yes! Because it helps having a detailed plan, rather than a doctor say “just cry it out”. I know without a plan i would give in every time, and i wouldt know what to do about early wakings, night feeds, etc.
